DESCRIPTION:Join VWL for a bird walk at a private farm near the village of Orlean\, VA. We will focus on building skills in bird IDs by sight and sound and will also explore how the management of shrubland and grassland habitats can affect bird communities. \nThe walk will run until around 9–9:30am and will involve walking through tall grass. We recommend bringing water\, light-colored clothing\, sun protection\, tick repellent\, and high boots or gaters. While the paths are mowed\, the ground is uneven at times and can be rough terrain. \nThis event will have a limited number of attendees\, and it will be first come\, first served. DESCRIPTION:Please join Celia Vuocolo\, Private Lands Biologist with Quail Forever and the Natural Resources Conservation Service\, and Sam Droege\, Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey to learn about the conservation threats and natural history of Virginia’s native bees\, and what you can do to support them. \n\nTheir presentations will provide an overview of pollination biology\, guidelines for creating pollinator habitat and an overview of our most at-risk native bees. \nThis event is FREE and open to the public. \nRegister here! \n\nFind out more about the presenters below: \n\nCelia Vuocolo has over ten years of experience in wildlife conservation and is the Private Lands Biologist for northeast Virginia. She provides technical assistance and information on federal cost-share opportunities for landowners interested in managing land for early successional species like the northern bobwhite\, native pollinators\, grassland birds and other wildlife. Celia’s position is supported by a partnership between Quail Forever\, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)\, and Department of Wildlife Resources. She is currently working towards an MNR in Restoration Ecology and Habitat Management at the University of Idaho. \n \nSam Droege grew up in Hyattsville\, Maryland\, received an undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland and a Master’s at the State University of New York – Syracuse. Most of his career has been spent at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. He has coordinated the North American Breeding Bird Survey Program\, developed the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program\, the Bioblitz\, Cricket Crawl\, and FrogwatchUSA programs. Currently\, his team is running an inventory and monitoring program for native bees\, developing tools and techniques manuals\, establishing a bumblebee floral survey for citizens\, along with online identification guides for North American bees at www.discoverlife.org\, and producing public domain hi-resolution photographs of bees\, insects\, and flowers at the USGS Native Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab. \n\n \n\n\n
