Amping up Amphibian Habitat: A Vernal Pool Installation Workshop

Friday, March 22nd, 2019 1:00 PM – Saturday, March 23rd, 2019 5:00 PM
Location: The Lodge at Willow Lake, Willowsford Lane 41085, Aldie, Virginia

Looking for a way to help salamanders, frogs, dragonflies and other beneficial insects? Consider creating a vernal pool on your property!

Mike Hayslett of Virginia Vernal Pools LLC will lead this two-day workshop, in which participants receive a lesson in vernal pool installation and then gain hands-on experience in the construction of two vernal pools on PEC's Roundabout Meadows farm near Gilberts Corner.

Vernal pools are seasonal wetlands covered by shallow water for variable periods from winter to spring and which may be completely dry for most of the summer and fall. They serve as important breeding habitats for many amphibian and insect species.

The workshop is geared towards landowners whose property contains some forest, as well as an existing stream or wetlands. Land management professionals or environmental consultants who would like to know more about vernal pool installation are also welcome. The workshop will consist of a classroom session and a field session. Participants should be prepared to be outside for ~8 hours.
